[Cnm] BMI for people with amputations

I agree with you Jeanne. I believe that other disciplines that are
looking at the BMI number would put too much credibility and reliance on
that "number" so after much debate, I have instructed my RD's to only
use %IBW as this is the only calculation that I know of that can give us
an idea of their weight status. As far as the coders, I made it clear
and consistently reinforce with them the fact that they can not use the
BMI on amputees for reimbursement. I would love to know what others are
doing (esp. with the coders) about this and their thoughts.

I have that chart, and I am wondering how, or if one would adjust BMI
for significant muscle atrophy, for instance in the DD population, for a
person whose limbs are intact, but has been using a wheelchair for all
or a significant part of their life. Also, while we are talking BMI, I
have read that it is not intended or reliable for adults under 5' tall.
So what other method would you use for a very petite adult?

There was a chart in the June 2008 issue of ADA times that addressing
BMI's for amputees.

As it is now important that BMI's are accurately documented, are other
people calculating a BMI for people with amputations? And if so, how are
you going about doing so? It doesn't seem like the results would be very
accurate to me but I'm looking for guidance.
Thank you!
