We have:
NPO Strict
NPO except ice chips.
NPO except ice chips and sips of water
NPO except Medications
These are options in the SMS diet order entry system. It makes no difference to the kitchen but the diet prints on the nursing work sheet and it helps them. It also comes on the dietitians list but they can't count on it being accurate. In other words we have other ways to know if someone is on TPN.

Hi All,

A question came up this morning about a patient who is NPO except for
meds. There was a concern that an NPO diet order would make nursing think
that the patient was NPO for everything--diet and meds. How is everyone
handling this-- using a diet order that says "NPO except meds" or in
another way?

Thanks for your input.
